Feeling unhealthy and unhappy with how she was living, Tina Devi knew it was time to make a change. She signed up to the 10 week Jumpstart challenge, coordinated by health and fitness experts at YMCA Auckland. Since completing the programme, Tina feels great, looks great, and is well on her way to a healthier future.
A doctor’s warning
Tina’s blood sugar levels were higher than recommended, and her doctor warned that she would need to lose weight to avoid a diabetes diagnosis. Tina became aware she wasn’t making enough effort to live a healthy lifestyle, and decided to do something about it.
The 32 year old wasted no time, signing up for the Jumpstart programme, run across Auckland at YMCA Auckland fitness centres by YMCA Auckland’s qualified fitness professionals.
Small changes, big rewards
Tina learnt through the Jumpstart programme that a few simple changes can go a long way.
From demonstrations on how to make a healthy breakfast, exercising in a group, and supermarket trips where members learn to read nutritional values, it was an eye-opening experience.
“From the first day you find out how to make simple changes. I’ve learnt that it’s very important to have a healthy breakfast, and that you should have options so that you don’t get bored. If I have to go somewhere, I try to walk, rather than take the bus.”
As well as walking whenever she can, she also shops smarter at the supermarket.
“When I go to buy something, I read the nutrition side of things. When you see a product, you think ‘oh that’s healthy,’ but when you read the sugar levels, it can have way too much sugar.”
She said the programme was so effective because it wasn’t a diet, but a change in lifestyle.
“I had tried shakes, diet pills, everything – but it never works. Sometimes it makes you really sick, and you can’t do it anymore.”
As part of the Jumpstart programme, the members not only learn about how to eat well, but how to get active. They have fun training sessions at the gym as a group, receive personalised training programmes and are taught how to use the gym’s machines, all in a safe, supportive environment.
Tina said being in a group with people who are all trying to make positive changes was surprisingly fun.
“It’s not like they are all slim people, so you don’t feel embarrassed – it’s all a mix, so you feel more confident.”
Reaping the rewards from her healthier lifestyle
Tina couldn’t be happier with the results she has seen after completing the Jumpstart programme in June. Since then, she has lost 10kg, and has gained confidence in how she looks and feels.
“My family and friends think it’s really good; whenever they see pictures of me on Facebook, they say ‘wow, you’re looking after yourself now.’
“I feel much better, and I’m sleeping better. When I wake up I want to get up and do something.”
She will continue on her journey towards a healthier lifestyle, and encourages others to join Jumpstart.
“Just come in and enjoy it. It’s really good to make friends and you get motivated by each other. I definitely recommend it.”
