We are very pleased and proud to be able to share the exciting news from the NZ Exercise Industry Awards, on the weekend.
New Zealand’s most fit and energetic professionals were awarded for their efforts in helping motivate people to stay healthy and active at the annual New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards. The awards recognise professionals and organisations that have excelled in the fitness industry and demonstrated a notably positive impact on the lives of New Zealanders.
After being named finalists for seven award categories (which is a huge feat in itself), the YMCA managed to take out four awards! Being a finalist (top 3 in some cases) is incredibly rewarding and great recognition for all involved.
"We are very proud of all those involved in the success of Jumpstart, from the participants, the referrers, our partners Pharmaco, Diabetes NZ, Procare, Auckland University and the various podiatrists who make it happen for us." - Peta McMillan, Jumpstart Programme Coordinator
Our Jumpstart Programme won the Programme Excellence Award - a truly unique programme which stood out from other finalists throughout the judging process.
The Jumpstart Diabetes Programme is a 10-week programme designed to support people with diabetes to make key lifestyle changes which will ultimately enable them to better self-manage their condition and improve their general health. The Jumpstart programme has supported more than 500 people in 10 communities in Hamilton and Auckland since its inception two years ago and expects more regional programmes to be up and running in 2017.
Potential winners are required to take part in a rigorous three-stage selection process before making it to the finals. Finalist judging procedures include a mystery shopper approach where applicants are judged on how they perform with clients under pressure, or in the programme setting. Commenting on the Award, Exercise Association of New Zealand (ExerciseNZ) Chief Executive Richard Beddie says judging gets more difficult each year as the NZ health and fitness industry takes on increased responsibility and strives to come up with new ways of encouraging Kiwis to be more active.
Mt Albert Recreation Centre continue to dominate the community space picking up a Community Excellence Award. The team at Mt Albert YMCA have committed to supporting their community by strengthening local partnerships with referrers and health groups. As well as the addition of a new Targeted Health Specialist, strong networks have strengthened the Jumpstart programme at Mt Albert, with success set to continue.
